"The main factor is the family`s economic status. Indeed, there are several other variables that contribute to encouraging people to find work abroad," Kupok remarked here on Tuesday.
He said this in reference to the increasing interest among the people of NTT in seeking employment abroad as migrant workers, even though they did not go through the right procedure to do so.
The data showed that from January to September 2018, the Indonesian Migrant Workers Task Force prevented 343 prospective migrant workers from NTT from illegally going abroad.
According to him, the main reasons why they go abroad are the family`s economic status and limited employment, but there are other variables that play a role and become a force that is so strong that people feel attracted to work abroad as migrant workers.
In fact, East Nusa Tenggara has been facing problems with regard to the migrant workforce, because from January to August 2018, a total of 73 workers from the province who were in Malaysia were sent back home in a lifeless condition.
In addition, the government of Malaysia has, so far, also deported some 44 Indonesian migrant workers for their involvement in drug-related cases.
Seeing this appalling condition, East Nusa Tenggara Deputy Josef Nae Soi has stated that a moratorium on sending Indonesian migrant workers from the province to work in Malaysia should be implemented immediately.
According to him, this moratorium is urgent and should be implemented without delay, because East Nusa Tenggara has been facing very critical problems with regard to migrant workers.
