In the competition, held at the Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Purnomo defeated Iranian athlete Davoudali Ghasemi, who recorded 11.97 seconds and was entitled to the silver medal, and Saudi Arabian athlete Ali Alnakhli, with a time of 12.01 seconds for the medal bronze.
The T37 100-meter Asian record was previously held by Chinese athlete Yongbin Liang, with a travel time of 11.51 seconds recorded at the 2012 Paralympics, London, England.
"I will not think about anything, including a record. I will just run, because the most important thing is to be the topper," he stated after the match.
Regarding the time record, Purnomo admitted that it was in line with the target, because from the beginning, he performed best in his flagship 100-meter race.
"According to the target, it will hopefully be even faster. In the last exercise before the 2018 Asian Para Games, my time was 11.50 seconds," he noted.
Thus, the T37 men`s 100-meter gold medal is Purnomo?s second gold medal in the 2018 Asian Para Games para-athletics after he also became the best in the men`s 200 meters T37 on Monday (Oct 8).
The runner from Central Java had the opportunity to increase his medal count because he will still on the 400-meter T37 run and 4x100 meter relay.
With that result, until Tuesday (Oct 9) at 18.30 WIB, Indonesian athletes have contributed a total of four 2018 Asian Para Games gold medals for the country.
Within the same time frame, Indonesia had collected eight gold medals at the 2018 Asian Para Games. Besides four of the athletes, gold medals were won in table tennis, swimming, bowling, and badminton.
