Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - The Jayapura`s Sentani airport authority said the runway of the airport would be enlarged to be able to accommodate wide bodied aircraft of the Airbus class.

Garuda Indonesia has asked the airport authority to enlarge the runway as the nation`s flag carrier plans to use Airbus aircraft to serve the route to Jayapura starting next year.

Head of the Jayapura`s airport Anthonius Praptono said runway 30 is already enlarged but runway 12 is still in the process of calculating the cost to be reported to Jakarta.

In principle, the airport authority supports the plan to enlarge the airport to be able to accommodate Airbus 330-200 aircraft.

So far Garuda has used Boeing aircraft to serve the route to Jayapura.

The Sentani airport is 3,000 meters long serving 200 aircraft landing and taking off everyday, Praptono said.

Meanwhile, General Manager of Garuda Jayapura Mac Fee Kondangen said preparations are in progress before Airbus aircraft to land for the first time in Sentani in 2019. Reporting by Evarukdijati
