Incessant heavy rains caused the Krueng Kerueto River to overflow its bank and inundate more villages, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ian Rizkyan, head of the North Aceh Police, stated here, Wednesday evening.
In Matang Kuli Sub-district, 22 villages, including Alue Tho, Ceubrek, Pante Pirak, Munye Pirak, Siren, Lawang, Hagu, Meuria, Mee, and Tanjong Tgk Ali, were flooded.
At least 20 families were evacuated to a mosque in Hagu Village. In Lawang Village, 18 families took refuge in a rural hall, he remarked.
In Tanah Luas Sub-district, floods submerged Teupin Me, Blang, Tanjong Mesjid, Serba Jaman Baro, and Rayeuk Kuta.
Meanwhile, in Aceh Jaya District, floodwaters, reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters, submerged rice and corn fields.
"I failed to harvest may corn plants due to flooding," Junaidi, a local farmer, stated in Blang Baro Village, Teunom Sub-district, Aceh Jaya.
He said he had planned to harvest his crops next week, but flooding destroyed his two-hectare corn field.
"There is no further hope as my corn plants are totally flooded following downpours and overflowing of the Krueng Teunom River," he noted.
"Today, the flooding has subsided, but my corn plants have been destroyed," he added.
Flooding has hit seven sub-districts in Aceh Jaya and submerged hundreds of homes.
The seven districts are Teunom, Panga, Pasie Raya, Darul Kamal, Setia Bakti, Krueng Sabe, and Sampoiniet.
Earlier, the National Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that several parts of the country are prone to flash floods in the ongoing rainy season.
BMKG Chairman Dwikorita Karnawati in a statement issued in Jakarta recently said that provinces prone to flooding were Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua.
"Those regions are prone to natural disasters, as they are located around active tectonic zones, such as at the foot of hilly areas that are steep and elongated," he added.
