Sukabumi, W Java (ANTARA News) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has asked Indonesian migrant workers and would-be migrant workers to improve their skills and capabilities.

Hopefully, Indonesian migrant workers would no longer be identical to domestic helpers and blue-collar workers, he said, while addressing a function marking the International Migrant Worker Day in Sukabumi district, West Java, on Tuesday.

More than one thousand people from various walks of life attended the commemoration of the International Migrant Day, which falls on Dec 18. The event served as a reminder of the declaration of Convention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families (through Resolution No. 45/158) on Dec 18, 1990, in New York, the United States.

Kalla stated that any Indonesian wishing to work abroad should not hesitate to improve their skills through job training centers and other polytechnics.

The government HAS also encouraged people wishing to work abroad to increase their skills, so that they will not be employed as domestic helpers or blue-collar workers, he explained.

"As such, the Indonesian workers will no longer be similar to domestic helpers, but will be similar to workers with good skills," he elaborated.

Working with certain skills abroad will not only increase the workers` income but will also enrich their experiences, he reiterated.

The workers could share their experience with their colleagues when they return to Indonesia, he pointed out.
