A total of 1,016 people were injured, 57 are still missing, while 11,687 others have been displaced, according to latest data issued by the National Disaster Mitigation Office (BNPB), here, early Monday.
Triggered by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, the tsunami that hit late on Saturday, December 22, 2018, also damaged 611 homes, 69 hotels and villas, 60 shops and small restaurants, as well as 420 boats.
The tsunami affected five districts: Pandeglang and Serang in Banten Province; and South Lampung, Tanggamus, and Pesawaran in Lampung Province.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman of BNPB, noted that the number of victims and damaged buildings might increase, as the agency`s personnel are still collecting further data.
The process of search, rescue, and evacuation is still underway, as several people are believed to still be buried under debris of collapsed buildings.
Mount Anak Krakatau`s eruption was most likely caused by an underwater landslide that triggered the tsunami along the Sunda Strait beaches.
Some 20 minutes after the eruption, a wall of water roared ashore, sweeping up everything in its path, including boats, tables, and people in the two provinces.
Volcanic activity from Mount Anak Krakatau could have triggered an underwater landslide that led to an abnormal tidal surge and the resulting tsunami, Nugroho stated on Sunday.
Mount Anak Krakatau, or the Child of legendary Mount Krakatoa, has been active for several months, and an alert status has been declared for it.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan remarked that the Jakarta administration is ready to send relief aid for victims of the Sunda Strait tsunami.
"Concerning assistance, we always provide what they need. We are ready. This morning, we send ambulances as well as medical and SAR teams there," Baswedan remarked at the Tarakan Public Hospital, here, on Sunday evening.
The governor sent 13 ambulances from Tarakan Hospital along with medical and rescue teams to Banten to help in the evacuation process following the tsunami.
Officers of the Jakarta administration were in close contact with their partners in Banten to coordinate the dispatch of relief aid, Baswedan noted.
