When completed, the dam is expected to play a role in reducing frequent flooding that hit the capital city of Jakarta.
"This dam can reduce flooding in the capital of Jakarta," President Jokowi said after overseeing the dam, located at Sukamahi Village in Mega Mendung, Bogor District.
The president on the occasion was accompanied by Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and West Java Deputy Governor Uu Ruzhanul.
The government through the Ciliwung Cisadane River Regional Office (BBWSCC) is working to overcome flooding in Jakarta by building dams in Ciawi and Sukamahi, located in Bogor District.
Construction of the two dams which began in 2017 are targeted for completion in 2019. Both dams are expected to reduce the floods in Jakarta, originating from Bogor.
The Ciawi Dam has a volume of 6.45 million cubic meters of water or can accommodate 365 cubic meters of water per second. While the Sukamahi Dam has a volume of 1.68 million cubic meters or 56 cubic meters of water per second.
These two dams have the function of slowing the water to Jakarta. The water will be accommodated by the two dams first and then will be channeled to Katulampa watergate.
With water that first enters the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dam, the water flowing into Katulampa becomes slower and lesser. From Katulampa watergate, it will be gradually released towards Jakarta.
If usually the duration of the flood that arrives from Katulampa to the Manggarai sluice is nine hours, the duration of the flood that arrived could be longer than four hours or be extended to 13 hours.
