Many houses and school buildings were destroyed or severely damaged in Kalianda's coastal villages. Besides, tens, or even up to hundreds of boats, motorcycles and cars were swept away by sea waves reaching a height of several meters.
In these two locations, many volunteers, rescue personnel as well as military and police officers have arrived to help evacuate the tsunami victims to safer places. According to data of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the death toll from the tsunami in Sunda Strait reached 430. At least, 1,495 people were injured, 159 people missing, and 21,991 others displaced by the natural disaster.
The agency believed that the number of casualties might increase because rescuers and volunteers were trying to reach remote coastal villages that might have been affected by the tsunami.
