"The Wi-Fi service was launched on the first flight from Denpasar with registration number PK-GQR. The team and I have a picture from 35 thousand feet high," Citilink`s President Director Juliandra Nurtjahjo said at the launch event here Friday.
The free internet service is provided through a collaboration between Citilink and Mahata Aero Teknologi.
The aircraft is equipped with a GX Aviation System produced by Inmarsat Aviation. The system allows passengers to surf the internet and social media during flights.
GX Aviation is the first and only global high-speed wireless connectivity service sent via the High-Throughput Satellites (HTS) network.
This connectivity service is fully owned and operated by Inmarsat, in collaboration with Lufthansa Technik as a provider of hardware, engineering, design and certification for the project.
Meanwhile, the Lufthansa System is software integration.
Juliandra noted that based on the agreement with Mahata, in 2019, there will be 19 Citilink aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi.
"By the end of 2019, 20 of our aircraft will be equipped with Wi-Fi, out of the 50 aircraft expected to have an internet connection by 2020," he said.
The PK-GQR aircraft with Wi-Fi serves the Jakarta-Denpasar, Jakarta-Banjarmasin, and Jakarta-Medan routes.
This free Wi-Fi service is also aimed at attracting millennials, who make up 70 percent of the Citilink passenger market.
