According to BNPB, Sukabumi is one of the districts in West Java Province, which is prone to landslides. Over the past 10 years, the district had experienced some 132 landslides, and several of which resulted in fatalities and damages.
The landslides that happened on March 28, 2015 in Cireunghas Sub-district, Sukabumi District, for instance, killed 12 people, affected 293 people, and damaged 11 houses.
In connection with the landslide mitigation, Nugroho said serious attention needs to be paid to such structural mitigation-related efforts as cliff reinforcement, installation of landslide early warning systems, reforestation as well as those related to non-structural mitigation, including mapping, socialization, spatial planning, and disaster management education.
