Sukabumi, W Java, (ANTARA News) - Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General Doni Monardo observed the disaster site in Cisolok, Sukabumi, West Java, on Friday.

Sukabumi has high fertility soils with landscape characteristics that can cause landslides.

One of the areas is Cimapag, Sirnaresmi village, Cisolok sub-district.

A few weeks ago, the village was hit by a landslide that killed several people.

BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho revealed that many areas in Sukabumi District were prone to landslides.

The topographical conditions of the hills with loose rocks can cause landslides.

The large number of people also lived in areas that were vulnerable to landslides.

"During the last 10 years, there were 132 landslides in Sukabumi that caused fatalities and damaged buildings," he said.

Landslide mitigation still requires a lot of attention, both structural and non-structural mitigations.

Structural mitigations are cliff reinforcements, installation of early warning systems, reforestation and others. Non-structural mitigations are mapping, socialization, spatial planning, disaster education, rehearsals and others.

The peak of the rainy season in most parts of Indonesia is from January to February. People are encouraged to increase their awareness during this time.

Sukabumi is also surrounded by oceans, which require disaster mitigation facilities. For this reason, the Head of BNPB also visited a number of facilities on the beach.

Meanwhile, on Saturday (11/1) morning, the BNPB head will visit the Sumur area, Lebak District, Banten Province.

Those areas were affected by the Sunda Strait tsunami last year.
