Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of students receiving Smart Indonesia Cards (KIPs) has increased significantly since 2014, Secretary General of Education and Culture Ministry Didik Suhardi PhD said.

"The number of KIP recipients was recorded at 7,950,012 in 2014, and the figure rose to 17,900,000 this year," he stated on Tuesday.

The number of KIP recipients rose significantly to 18,977,014 in 2015 from 7,950,012 in 2014 and moved up further to 19,221,903 in 2016. However, the figure decreased to 18,248,287 in 2017 and increased again to 18,745,047 in 2018.

The government allocated Rp4.3 trillion for the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP) in 2014, Rp9.7 trillion in 2015, Rp9.68 trillion in 2016, Rp9.36 trillion in 2017, and Rp9.71 trillion in2018.

PIP is cash education assistance for children aged between 6 and 21 years. The children are from poor families, poor-prone families, prosperous family card (KKS) holders, and family hope program (PKH) holders, in addition to orphans, children with disabilities, and victims of natural disasters.

PIP is a revision of the assistance program for poor students. It aims to enable all segments of the community to have access to educational services.
