AntaraJakarta (ANTARA) - The volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait, is still on a standby status and continues to be monitored by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) of the ESDM Geological Agency.
The monitoring is carried out from the Gunung Api (PGA) Observation Post, located on Jalan Tj. Wonder - Penengahan No. 4, Totoharjo, Bakauheni, South Lampung District, Lampung Province, and Pasauran PGA in Cinangka, Serang, Banten.
PVMBG, in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, reported that based on seismograph records till March 11, 2019, Anak Krakatau experienced seven non-harmonic tremors, three volcanic earthquakes, and one continuous tremor with amplitude of 1 to 5 millimeters.
The Level III (standby) activity status has been valid since Dec 27, 2018, to limit the daily activities of people and tourists within a radius of 5 kilometers from the crater of the mount. From yesterday until this morning (March 12), the volcano had been visually covered in fog. The wind was weak to the east, and there was no smoke observed from the crater.
On Feb 23, 2019, at 17:33 WIB, it spewed plumes of volcanic ash that rose 500 meters in height after an earthquake. The amplitude of the earthquake was 25 mm, and the duration of the earthquake was 271 seconds.
People in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung Province are expected to stay calm and not believe in rumors about the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau or subsequent tsunamis, so that they can carry out their daily activities as usual by following the directives of the local BPBD.
Anak Krakatau Volcano (156.9 m asl), located in the Sunda Strait, is a type A volcano. It is a young volcano that appeared in the caldera after a paroxysmal eruption in 1883 from the Krakatoa Volcanic Complex. Eruption activities began in 1927 when the volcano was still under the sea.
From 1929 till date, Mount Anak Krakatau has been in the construction phase. It erupted on June 20, 2016 and on Feb 19, 2017, in the form of a strombolian eruption. On June 29, 2018, it erupted again in the form of strombolian eruption.
