"If it is here, we want the effort to be sustainable, so that it will strengthen tourism. This is because the (reserves from) mining will eventually run out."
Pangkal Pinang, Babel, (ANTARA) -
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed hope that the tourism industry in Bangka Belitung Province would continue to be empowered to boost the regional economy.

"If it is here, we want the effort to be sustainable, so that it will strengthen tourism. This is because the (reserves from) mining will eventually run out," the president stated in Pangkalpinang on Thursday.

The president revealed that apart from Tanjung Kelayang, the government will also build a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for development of the tourism sector in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

Regions that have the potential to become tourist destinations include Tanjung Gunung and Sungailiat.

The president believes the development of tourism areas can be driven by investment.

"I think, for instance, there are also several incoming investments in Tanjung Kelayang," he noted.

The head of state had earlier explained that the Regional Original Income (PAD) of the Tanjung Kelayang tourist destination had increased by 300 percent.

Several investors in the lodging sector are interested in growing businesses in SEZs in Bangka Belitung, such as the Sheraton in Tanjung Kelayang, Sofitel, and the M Gallery.

Investments worth Rp9 trillion have entered Tanjung Kelayang.

"We hope that later on, the next SEZ will also receive another investment," Jokowi stated.
