The resolution prolongs the mandate for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), as noted in a written statement issued by Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and received here on Tuesday.
"This is the first resolution proposed by Indonesia that managed to get approval from the UNSC since Indonesia joined the council in January 2019," Permanent Representative of Indonesia to UN in New York, Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani noted.
Ambassador Djani also highlighted the importance of the resolution that mandates UN agencies to continue programs and activities supporting Afghanistan in an attempt to achieve progress in the ongoing peace process, including developments prioritized by the Afghanistan government.
The resolution comprises the UN’s role in supporting peace-making and stability in Afghanistan and the UNSC’s commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity, among others. It also grants support to the Afghanistan government to build its country and strengthen its democracy.
The resolution also highlights the centrality; the comprehensive, inclusive political process that are Afghan-led and Afghan-owned; and the attempt to turn Afghanistan into a platform for international cooperation.
Prolonging the UNAMA mandate is vital in coordinating various international aids, including support needed for preparing for the Afghanistan Presidential Election in 2019.
The resolution was lauded by other members of the the UNSC and Afghanistan that praise Indonesia and Germany for their successful efforts in obtaining consensual approvals from all members of UNSC.
"The unity of UNSC is important to give Afghanistan a clear sign that the international community gives them their full support," Ambassador Djani remarked.
The resolution was approved by UNSC at the meeting chaired by France that as of March 1, 2019, assumed the presidency of UNSC for a month.
