"This centre for industrial, export, and logistics development will be spread over an area of 534 hectares,"
Manado (ANTARA) - The Bitung Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in North Sulawesi Province is slated to serve as a base for industrial, export, and logistics development, the province's Industry and Trade Department stated.

"This centre for industrial, export, and logistics development will be spread over an area of 534 hectares," Head of the North Sulawesi Industry and Trade Department Jenny Karouw stated here on Tuesday.

Karouw elaborated that the North Sulawesi SEZ will become the hub for the development of businesses, including coconut and fishery product processing plants in addition to logistic support for several industries.

"The SEZ will also be home to other industries, including pharmaceuticals, so the scope is not solely limited to the processing of coconut and fishery products. Materials for the pharmaceutical industry will be sourced locally, including nutmeg," he remarked.

"The process of licensing and land acquisition for investor companies is still ongoing," he noted.

The government is in the process of completing the construction of supporting infrastructure for the Bitung SEZ, such as the Bitung International Hub Seaport and Manado-Bitung Toll Road.

A container terminal, with an annual capacity of 500 thousand twenty-foot equivalent units, was constructed at the Bitung International Hub Seaport area.

Furthermore, development of the Manado-Bitung Toll Road is underway, with the target of becoming fully operational in October 2019.

The 39.9-kilometer-long toll road, with two segments, will have a capacity to accommodate 14 thousand vehicles daily.
