Jakarta (ANTARA) - A powerful earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck 87 kilometers southwest of Banggai Islands in Central Sulawesi province on Friday at 06.40 West Standard Indonesia Time (WIB).

The earthquake was centered at 1.90 degrees southern latitude and 122.54 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The tremor was felt in Sumalata at III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), Manado at II on MMI, Gorontalo at II-III on MMI, Kotamobagu at III on MMI, North Kolaka at III -IV on MMI, Kendari at II -III on MMI, Konawe at II on MMI, Kolaka at III on MMI, and Konawe Islands at III on MMI.

In response to the earthquake, the BMKG issued an early tsunami warning for Central Sulawesi.
