Palu (ANTARA) - Following an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on Friday at 07.40 p.m. local time, the situation in Bangai Islands, Banggai and Morowali districts in Central Sulawesi province was reported to be safe and residents were evacuated to the mountain ranges, a spokesman said.

"There was a blackout in Morowali district. The BPBD (Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency) has put up an emergency tent there," Chief of Search and Aid of the Palu Municipal Search and Rescue (SAR) Office Basrano said on Friday night.

He called on local residents to remain calm and not to panic.

By Friday night, there were no reports of material damage caused by the earthquake, which was centered 85 kilometers southwest of Banggai Islands at a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tremor was felt in the Poso, Buol, Morowali and Banggai districts and Palu municipality at IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), North Kolaka and Toli-toli at III-IV on MMI, Sumalata, Kotamobagu, Palopo, Kolaka, Makassar and Konawe Islands at III on MMI, Gorontalo and Kendari at II-III on MMI, and Manado, Pinrang and Konawe at II on MMI.
