Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's accomplishment in successfully and peacefully convening the presidential and parliamentary elections on Wednesday signifies the public's rising democratic maturity, Indonesia Ulemas Council (MUI) Deputy Chairman Zainut Tauhid Saadi stated.

"The MUI has appealed to the public to follow all processes pertaining to the simultaneous election with due patience and remain devout," Saadi remarked here on Friday.

The MUI deputy chairman is upbeat that the current stability in the situation would be maintained, pending completion of all processes concerning the elections.

Saadi pointed out that the council was all praises for the duo presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs, who have demonstrated all qualities of a statesman by urging their followers to uphold brotherhood and national unity.

Winning teams of both pairs have appealed to supporters to remain unperturbed by the quick count results made public by different survey institutes and to await the General Election Commission's (KPU's) official result.

The MUI has urged every party to exercise restraint by desisting from overly reacting to either victory or defeat. It also appealed to the people to initiate legal actions against any electoral violation.

"This is since it is the path of democracy that we opt for as a religious, modern, and civilized country," he affirmed, adding that democracy does not entail violence and coercion of will that tends to only create rifts in the country.

Saadi believes that despite differing public choices, the spirit of unity and brotherhood as one country must be upheld.

The MUI deputy chairman urged elections organizers, comprising the General Election Commission (KPU) and Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), to fulfill their duties honestly, wholeheartedly, and with complete dedication to the nation.

"The TNI/Polri (Indonesian military and police) must continue to guard, protect, and secure the people of Indonesia," he added.
