Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) - State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) dispatched a disaster-response team to Bengkulu that took a beating from flooding and landslides over the weekend to restore the electrification system damaged by the natural disasters.

The floods and landslides damaged numerous electrical installations that provided electricity to Bengkulu Province, PT PLN Division for South Sumatra, Jambi, and Bengkulu noted in a press statement released on Monday.

The electrical installations in one city and nine districts suffered damage from the floods and landslides.

The natural disasters caused power outages at 149 electrical relay stations and led to 64 medium- and low-voltage electrical poles collapsing. As a result, electricity connections to 9,436 subscribers were affected.

The need arose to apply partial power outage in numerous affected areas to ascertain environment safety and avert the greater impact of the destruction.

He noted that operations were resumed at 39 distribution relay stations to offer service to 2,334 customers, while 110 others are yet non-operational for catering to 7,102 customers.

The deployment of a disaster-response team comprising 70 members, equipped with three cranes and six double-cabin ranger vehicles, aims to facilitate swifter restoration of electrical installations damaged in Bengkulu.

In Bengkulu, 160 personnel comprising PLN's 100 technical service officers and 60 personnel from four teams of PLN's work partners were stationed in affected areas for repairing the damaged installations.

The floods and landslides that hit Bengkulu three days ago claimed 29 lives, whereas the number of those still missing reached 13, Rusdi Bakar, the Bengkulu Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) head, remarked here, Monday.

The landslides severed access to numerous roads in Central Bengkulu and isolated the sub-districts of Mengi Sakti and PagarJati.

Some 13 thousand people were affected, while 12 thousand others were displaced and forced to evacuate to higher ground.
