"This exhibition aims to highlight Indonesia's varied endeavors in its contribution to world peace, specifically for UN peacekeeping missions, democracy, and human rights," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi remarked in New York on Monday (May 7).
The photo exhibition, being held on May 6-17, 2019, places the spotlight on Indonesia's contribution to world peace and prosperity and the promotion of human rights.
Indonesia's contribution showcased at the photo exhibition is segregated into the three clusters of investment in the field of promoting democracy and building peace, in women as the agents of change and peace, and in the field of development cooperation.
"The photo exhibition will bring to light Indonesia's commitment to playing its part in realizing world peace. Peace not only means the absence of war but is also about the existence of democracy and development," Foreign Minister Marsudi emphasized.
The photo exhibition is part of an entire series of activities held within the framework of the Indonesian Presidency in the UN Security Council in May 2019.
"The photo exhibition sheds light on the contribution of Indonesia that has taken active, consistent steps to help maintain international peace. The photo exhibition, in essence, captures the moment. People will be able to recollect the plethora of contributions to Indonesia's name. Hence, it will significantly influence the public's judgments regarding Indonesia's contribution," Foreign Minister Marsudi remarked.
Indonesia officially kicked off its assignment as the UN Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent member, with Permanent Representative Dian Triansyah Djani hoisting the Red and White flag at the UN Headquarters, New York, the United States, on Jan 2.
Indonesia has been selected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the period between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, the fourth time since having earlier held the same position during the 1973-1974, 1995-1996, and 2007-2008 period.
Indonesia has set its focus on handling four priority issues and one special attention issue, specifically strengthening the ecosystem and geopolitics of global peace and stability by encouraging peaceful dialog and resolution of conflicts, forging synergies between regional organizations for maintaining peace and stability in the region, intensifying cooperation between countries and the UNSC to fight terrorism, extremism, and radicalism, and striving to coordinate efforts to create peace through sustainable development efforts.
