"Indonesia and Suriname have agreed to bolster economic cooperation," Marsudi remarked in Paramaribo, Suriname, following her meeting with the Suriname foreign minister, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry noted in a statement here on Tuesday.
Marsudi has embarked on a working visit to Suriname, the first one in over the last 26 years. She also paid a courtesy call on Suriname President Desire Delano Bouterse.
Indonesia and Suriname have shared special relations, as the country, situated in the South American continent, is also home to people of Javanese descent who speak the language.
"Sharing special historical and cultural relations, it is only natural for Indonesia and Suriname to deepen their bilateral relations in different fields, specifically economic development," she pointed out.
In the economic field, both nations will enhance cooperation in infrastructure development, mining, energy, syariah banking development, and husbandry, especially in the field of artificial insemination.
Indonesia has voiced its interest in taking part in infrastructure development projects in Suriname, including in those funded by the Islamic Development Bank, Marsudi stated.
During her visit, both countries inked a cooperation agreement on visa for short visits for holders of diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports.
