Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government and airline companies are committed to providing cheap flights by slashing flight tickets to up to 50 percent of the upper tariff for domestic low cost carriers (LCC). The commitment was made after the government through the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Transportation Ministry and the State Enterprises Ministry held a coordination meeting with Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air Group and state airport operators Angkasa Pura I and II aimed at evaluating the policy of reducing flight tickets.

"We have discussed it with all the relevant parties. To realize the result of the coordination meeting last week, all five of us will jointly shoulder the burden to reduce the LCCs' flight tickets," Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono said in a press briefing in Jakarta Monday.

The decision to lower flight tickets is not so simple because it involves discussions and considerations related to tariff reduction simulation by airline companies, he said.

"It is not easy to do that. After we conducted tariff calculation simulation Garuda and Lion Air conveyed the relatively heavy cost procedure. However, all five of us are committed to lowering the flight tickets for low-cost carriers," he said.

The reduction of flight tickets has also considered the aspects of the aviation business in the country so as to ensure the continuity of their business, he said.

"There must be a balance between the public need and expectation with regard to the availability of cheap flights," he said. (INE)
