Jakarta (ANTARA) - A joint team formed by the National Police on January 8, 2019 to investigate an attack on Novel Baswedan, senior investigator of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), believes that one of six cases handled by Novel was the reason behind the attack.

The 65-member team suspects the mastermind of the attack felt hurt or wanted revenge against Novel, an investigator of corruption cases, Nur Kholis, spokesman of the team, told the press here on Wednesday.

The six major cases are e-ID corruption case involving former House speaker Setya Novanto, a bribery case involving former chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) Akil Mochtar, a bribery case involving former secretary general of the Supreme Court (MA) Nurhadi, a bribery case involving former district head of Buol Amran Batalipu, a corruption case involving construction of an athletic hostel, and a swallow nest theft case.

"So, actually it's not limited only to these six cases, but our working period is limited to six months. We only managed to determine these six cases handled by Novel that had the potential to trigger such revenge," Nur Kholis said.

"On average, cases handled by the KPK are high profile. They (the perpetrators) would not do it by themselves, but ask others to attack (Novel) with acid," he noted.

The team comprising police officers, KPK officials, experts, academicians and mass organization members completed its work on July 7, 2019, but failed to solve the mystery of the Novel Baswedan case due to their limited time.

Novel Baswedan was attacked while heading home after performing Fajr, or the Dawn prayer, at a mosque nearby when two motorcyclists hurled acid on his face which injured his eyes, causing him to lose vision in his left eye, on April 11, 2017.

The 42-year-old retired police officer joined the anti-graft agency in 2007, which entrusted him with investigating major corruption cases, including those allegedly involving several high-ranking officials. Since then, he has been terrorized and attacked.

Both the Jakarta Metro Jaya Police and the National Police Crime Investigation Department have claimed that they were investigating the case, but the investigation has failed to trace the attackers.
