Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo has drawn attention of the community to be ready to face an era of disruption that has brought about a change in public behavior, from engaging in physical activities to a network.

"The world is not merely changing but is being disrupted. In this era of disruption, the establishment can collapse, and the impossible can occur. The type of work can change at any time. Many old jobs disappear," President Widodo remarked in his speech at the Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic Indonesia 2019 on Friday.

In the era of globalization marked by the entry of the industrial revolution 4.0, the president reminded all sections of society to ready themselves in facing global competition.

Furthermore, an escalation in trade wars between the United States and China can impact economic stability and world security, including in Indonesia.

"Competition is getting sharper, and trade wars are heating up. Countries are fighting amongst one another for investment, technology, markets, and smart people. Inter-country competition is rife in search for great talent that can usher in progress in their countries," he added.

The president emphasized that Indonesians must be able to adapt by mastering knowledge and technology in a bid to stay abreast of the changes, particularly in terms of providing employment.

The current business pattern also evolves, thereby resulting in old jobs being replaced with new ones in accordance with the era of disruption.

"Established skills are suddenly irrelevant, and honing new skills has become necessary. The flow of communication and interactions, that are increasingly easy and open, must be utilized and observed at the same time," the president stated.
