"Indonesia is considered one of the examples across the world, where (the government) is able to balance the freedom of expression, the freedom of the media and national security," Rudiantara remarked.
Indonesia is not a country that blocks everything or all services of the information and communication technology (ICT) when it comes to national security issues, Rudiantara told Antara after inaugurating its latest "BrandA" news service system.
"We limit some features on social media with regard to videos and pictures, but we still allow people to enjoy the voice and short message service," he noted.
"We have to pick and select which features we have to limit," he said, adding, "So the keyword is limitation."
The Indonesian government had cut internet access on August 23 in Papua to stop the spread of racist messages and misinformation after the violent protests resumed.
Indonesia had also partially limited social media to prevent the spread of false information after some unrest in the capital, Jakarta, following the announcement of the presidential election results in May 2019.
