Manokwari, W Papua (ANTARA) - The Directorate General of Air Transportation from the Ministry of Transportation will begin the expansion work on three airports in the Province of West Papua in 2020. The three airports include Manokwari's Rendani airport, Fakfak airport, and the Raja Ampat airport.

"The Governor and I, as well as the Executive Unit Chiefs and district heads went to Jakarta in response to the invitation from the Minister (of Transportation). The expansion of the Kaimana airport was also a part of the discussion," said Head of the West Papua Transportation Office, Agustinus Kadakolo, in Manokwari, Tuesday.

The meeting focused on runway extensions, he said. The ministry’s budget will be ready in 2020, and for that reason, provincial governments have been urged to prepare the required documents.

"The runway for Raja Ampat will be extended from 600 meters to 1,500 meters. The one in Manokwari will have an additional 300 meters, while Kaimana airport will also be expanded to support air transportation activities," he said.

Construction at the Manokwari airport is expected to be completed by 2021, he further stated.

"The provincial government has been asked to settle land acquisition processes," he said, adding that thus far, the provincial government has handed the land certificate for expansion work at Fakfak, while the others are still in progress. (INE)
