Azis' appointment as new Police chief was stipulated under Presidential Decree No 97/Polri/2019 on the inauguration of Commissioner General Idham Azis as Polri chief, dated November 1, 2019.
Jokowi led the swearing in ceremony and read the oath followed by Azis. Following his inauguration as the Polri chief, Azis was promoted to the post of general.
Attendees at the ceremony comprised Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Indonesia's fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri, Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo, House Speaker Puan Maharani, former Polri chief Tito Karnavian, and Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, as well as several ministers.
The House of Representatives (DPR) approved the appointment of Azis as new Polri chief at a plenary meeting led by Maharani on Thursday (Oct 31).
During a fit and proper test conducted by the Parliament on Wednesday, Azis outlined his seven priority programs as the Polri chief. The priority program included preparing capable human resources, professional and just law enforcement, and media management.
Azis, former chief of the Polri's Crime Investigation Department, succeeded Karnavian, who has been appointed as home affairs minister by President Jokowi.
