Jakarta (ANTARA) - The electric car motorsport championship Formula E, scheduled on June 6, 2020, at the National Monument, Jakarta, was postponed amid coronavirus cases recently surfacing across the city.

Governor Anies Baswedan officially sent a letter on the postponement to the Organizing Committee Jakarta E-Prix on Monday, March 10.

“Based on developments in the COVID-19 outbreak across the globe, since it also occurs, especially in Jakarta, Formula E, scheduled on June 2020, must be postponed,” according to the letter.

The letter number 117/-1.857.73 has some copy notations, including to State Secretary Minister, Internal Affairs Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister, Health Minister, and Head of the Jakarta Local Parliament.

The Committee had earlier announced this event would take place on June 6, 2020, as they ensured no obstacles, since the Jakarta provincial government had set aside a special budget of Rp1.6 trillion (some US$111 million).

Nonetheless, the recent situation of the coronavirus outbreak had resulted in the event being rescheduled. As of March 10, 2020, Indonesia confirmed some 27 cases of infection, mostly being cured at the Sulianti Saroso Infectious Disease Hospital in North Jakarta.
