Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta remains the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Indonesia with 2,242 confirmed cases, or more than half the total infections recorded in the country as of Monday, as per data from the government’s website.

Indonesia has so far reported 4,241 COVID-19 cases and 373 deaths, of which 209 have been recorded in Jakarta alone.

According to data on the Jakarta provincial administration's website, corona.jakarta.go.id, accessed by ANTARA on Monday, 142 COVID-19 patients in the capital city have fully recovered from the novel coronavirus disease and have been discharged from hospital.

Currently, there are 1,370 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment at hospitals in Jakarta, while 521 others presenting with COVID-19 symptoms are observing self-isolation, the website revealed.

To break the chain of the coronavirus pandemic, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has imposed large-scale social restrictions and distancing measures in the capital city since April 10.

The restrictions will remain in place for 14 days, during which poor and vulnerable families in Jakarta will receive aid.

During the imposition of the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) status, eight points have been set in accordance with the policy outlined by the health minister's decree on PSBB, encompassing studying, working, and worshipping from home.

Gatherings of more than five people have also been prohibited.

Saleh Partaonan Daulay, a member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR), which is overseeing health and workforce issues, has praised the central government for allowing the Jakarta provincial administration to enforce the policy.

The restrictions are expected to accelerate the nation's efforts to curb the spread of the deadly virus. To make sure the restrictions are enforced effectively, all necessary measures must be prepared well, Daulay said.

The coronavirus disease initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of 2019. Since then, it has spread to almost all countries across the globe, including Indonesia, prompting the World Health Organization to declare it a global pandemic. (INE)
