Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned contractor PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) has allocated corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds totaling Rp3.14 billion to be distributed to assist frontline medical workers at hospitals, along with community members, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The CSR funds were used to provide a number of hospitals in Jakarta with items that they need in their fight against the novel coronavirus disease, including hazmat suits, face masks and medical equipment, WIKA Corporate Secretary Mahendra Vijaya said.

Among the recipients were Jakarta's National Brain Center Hospital, Columbia Hospital in Pulomas, Pondok Kopi Islamic Hospital and Fatmawati Public Hospital, Vijaya said in a press statement that ANTARA received here Monday.

Along with other state-owned enterprises, WIKA helped fund the operation of a public kitchen in the Utan Kayu neighborhood of Matraman, East Jakarta, which provides daily meals for those in need, he said.

In backing Indonesia's fight against the coronavirus pandemic throughout the country, WIKA built and renovated a number of health facilities, including the Wisma Atlet emergency hospital and Galang Island's observation and quarantine site, he added.

The COVID-19 pandemic that initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of 2019 and then spread throughout much of the world, including Indonesia, is an enormous crisis in human history.

Considering its staggering impact on public health and socio-economic sectors, the Indonesian Government encourages companies, embassies, and community members to assist those suffering from the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, for instance, distributed relief packages containing staple foods to Indonesians in April and May, which included rice, cooking oil, canned food, biscuits and instant noodles.

The moves by WIKA and the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra resonate with calls for mutual cooperation, echoed earlier by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

In a recent statement, President Jokowi highlighted the importance of fostering the spirit of "gotong royong", or mutual cooperation, arguing that the government cannot work alone to fight the spread of COVID-19.

"The entire nation's participation is indispensable," President Jokowi reiterated in a video statement.

The caring-and-sharing movement must be made public, which is not aimed at showing off, but at keeping hope alive and inspiring others to perform similar good deeds, he noted.
