Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has sought a 10-year prison sentence and a Rp500,000 fine, equivalent to six months’ imprisonment, for former minister of youth and sports, Imam Nahrawi, in an alleged graft case.

The case was heard by the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday, and was broadcast via video conferencing.

During the hearing, KPK prosecutor Ronald Worotikan charged the former minister with receiving Rp11.5 billion in bribes and gratuities worth Rp8.648 billion from officials of the National Sports Committee.

Nahrawi, who is a member of the National Awakening Party (PKB), attended the hearing at the KPK headquarters, but only some of his attorneys and the corruption court's judges were present in the courtroom, as part of efforts to maintain physical distancing and minimize risk of coronavirus infections.

At the hearing, the prosecutor also urged Nahrawi to return some of the bribes and gratuities, amounting to Rp19,154,203,882, to the states, no later than one month after the judges find him guilty, and the verdict is final and executory.

"If the defendant fails to return the money, his private assets will be seized and auctioned off as a substitute. If the defendant's assets do not compensate the penalty (amount), he would spend an additional three years in prison," Worotikan remarked.

Besides seeking a prison sentence and a fine, the prosecutor also asked the judges to revoke Nahrawi's political rights for a certain period of time.

While stating the charges against the minister, the prosecutor explained Nahrawi and his personal assistant, Miftahul Ulum, have been proven to have accepted Rp11.5 billion in bribes from KONI's secretary-general, Ending Hamidy and KONI's general treasurer, Johnny E Awuy.

The bribes were offered to smooth the way for KONI's grant proposals during the 2018 fiscal year. In 2018, Indonesia's national sports committee had requested grants for athletes' recruitment, assistance, and training for the 18th Asian Games and the 3rd Asian Para Games. (INE)
