A total of 1,275 families were affected by the flooding that also inundated 163 hectares of agricultural landTanah Bumbu, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Three villages in Satui Sub-district, Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, were swamped over the past 48 hours after unremitting, torrential rains led to Satui River overflowing its banks, the local Natural Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) stated.
Eriyanto Rais, head of the Tanah Bumbu BPBD, stated here on Thursday that Sinar Bulan, Sungai Danu, and Sejahtera Mulia were the three villages affected by flooding.
"A total of 1,275 families were affected by the flooding that also inundated 163 hectares of agricultural land," he remarked.
Height of the overflowing water discharge has continued to rise, reaching two to three meters.
The BPBD estimated that water discharge in the area will continue to rise in the wake of unremitting rains.
In Sejahtera Mulia Village, the local authorities established a public kitchen and emergency tents to accommodate people displaced by the floods.
The office has also offered temporary shelters at a junior elementary school to those affected by the flooding in Sinar Bulan Village.
The BPBD personnel, in cooperation with police officers, helped to evacuate flood victims and continued to patrol affected areas and reminded local villagers to remain wary, as floodwaters could rise again abruptly owing to downpour.
"We ensure that all personnel on duty work optimally to evacuate the affected residents, and we also prepare basic necessities and medicines as well as public kitchens to prepare meals during flooding," Rais noted. (INE)
