The Patimban Port has an important and strategic role in boosting growth and trade in the West Java region and is developed to complement the Tanjung Priok (port)
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) laid emphasis on speeding up the development of Patimban Port located in Subang District, West Java.

While chairing a limited meeting on Acceleration of the Patimban National Strategic Project held via videoconferencing from the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on Tuesday, Jokowi affirmed that the new main port will play a crucial role in fostering growth and trade in the West Java region.

"The Patimban Port has an important and strategic role in boosting growth and trade in the West Java region and is developed to complement the Tanjung Priok (port)," he noted.

The North Coast of Java, connected by toll roads, in future, should be able to serve as a super economic corridor.

The development of Patimban Port will be one of the keys to realizing this, so that industrial areas as well as tourism and agricultural centers will be connected to one another.

"With the development of this Patimban Port, a triangle of economic growth areas will be built, specifically Patimban Port, Kertajati Airport, as well as areas in Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta as an industrial area, connected and mutually supporting each other, so that they achieve competitiveness, especially of products, export products, and more specifically in the automotive sector," the president stated.

In connection with expediting development, the head of state urged his staff to simultaneously be heedful of the socio-economic impacts on local fishermen.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries can immediately act and offer assistance to local fishermen affected by this development.

"For instance, the KKP (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries) can provide assistance to the affected fishermen," he stated.

Furthermore, the construction of Patimban Port must also be followed by a consolidated model of developing the main port. Later, each major port must have its own segment, so that the ports complement one another.

"Patimban, Tanjung Priok, and 28 other major ports must be completely consolidated, so that the future direction of their development is concrete and clear and can function as complementary segments. We are optimistic of this consolidation accelerating the growth of regional economic centers, as well as providing swift services in the logistics sector, thereby boosting the efficiency and competitiveness of our export products," he stated.

In November 2019, President Jokowi had inspected the development of Patimban Port, which is a long-term, gradual development project, with an investment value of Rp29 trillion to Rp50 trillion.

The total area of Patimban Port reaches 654 hectares, of which 300 hectares will be used for containers and vehicle terminals. The port capacity is expected to reach 7.5 million TEUs.

With this capacity, Patimban Port will later become one of the largest ports in Indonesia that is prepared to support export and import activities.
