Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry's Director General for Marine Spatial Management Affairs, Aryo Hanggono, died of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) here on Monday morning.

Hanggono’s demise was confirmed by Head of the ministry's Public Relations and Foreign Cooperation Bureau Agung Tri Prasetyo in a WA group on Monday.

Hanggono was exposed to COVID-19 after embarking on working visits to several regions with Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Edhy Prabowo, who had also contracted the disease.

During a working visit to East Kalimantan, Hanggono had attended several events with Minister Prabowo, including the release of hatchlings in Maratua, one of the outermost small islands in the province.

Minister Prabowo's entourage, comprising Director General of PRL Hanggono, was present for several days at the start of the first week of September 2020.

After returning from the work visits, Minister Prabowo was reportedly exposed to COVID-19.

Prabowo was initially offered treatment at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital and then transferred to the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, Jakarta.

Hanggono was also treated at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital since Sept 9 though he breathed his last on Monday at around 4:50 a.m. local time. Related news: North Sumatra's seven doctors treating patients succumb to COVID-19
