"The Ummah Party will work and struggle by consistently upholding the state's ideology of Pancasila, the 1945 State Constitution, and all universal values of democracy," Rais remarked while announcing the name of his new party through his official YouTube channel that ANTARA monitored here, Thursday.
The Muslims' holy book of Al Qur'an has encouraged believers to keep alive the ethos of "amar ma'ruf nahi munkar" (do good deeds and abandon bad ones) and "al-amru bil 'adli dan an-nahya' anudzulimi" (fight for justice and against tyranny), Rais affirmed.
The first moral belief tends to be followed at the personal, familial, and communal levels, while the second is applied at the national level and pertains to matters of the state's power, the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) former speaker stated.
"The history of human civilization has revealed that only a state is able to perform colossal acts of tyranny. In return, it is also the state that can deliver fair justice to all," he pointed out.
Thus, with its complete facilities and apparatuses, the state is able to conduct acts of political, economic, social, legal, and humanitarian tyranny. However, he asserted that it is also the state that can mete out fair justice to the entire nation.
"All this depends on the government, whether those in power are fighting for justice of all elements in communities or are they struggling for the interests of conglomerates and corporatocracy," Rais affirmed.
Ultimately, a group of people should continually strive to create justice and fight against tyranny systematically through political struggles. To this end, the Ummat Party remains committed to collaborating with other elements of Indonesian society to fight against tyranny and create justice, he affirmed.
Born in Surakarta, Central Java, on April 26, 1944, Rais is well-known as one of the central leaders of the reform movement that successfully marked the end of the New Order regime.
Rais is also an outstanding political analyst and retired professor in political sciences at the Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and former top leader of Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's second-largest Muslim-based organization after the Nahdlatul Ulama.
Furthermore, Rais is one of the key figures, who founded the National Mandate Party (PAN) on August 23, 1998.
