It is true the joint team has successfully foiled a firearm trade involving a Brimob officer, identified as Chief Brigadier JH, who is being held in (police) custody in JayapuraJayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Papua Provincial Police Chief Inspector General Paulus Waterpauw confirmed, Friday, that a military and police personnel team had foiled the trade of assault rifles involving a Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer in Nabire.
"It is true that the joint team has successfully foiled a firearm trade involving a Brimob officer, identified as Chief Brigadier JH, who is being held in (police) custody in Jayapura," he stated.
The joint team is conducting a comprehensive probe into the case, including the possibility of the assault rifles being sold to an armed civilian group in the province, he remarked.
Waterpauw revealed that the police had since long received information on the firearm trade.
The assault rifle trade came to the light after the Brimob officer was found carrying two assault rifles in Nabire.
"From the confession of his friend, acting as a broker, six firearm transactions were conducted," he stated.
Waterpauw alleged that the firearms will be sold to a person or a group of people to disturb peace and public order and to shoot at civilians and security personnel.
"Be patient, as the investigators are still probing the case intensively. We are still waiting for a former military member as a witness. He is now on the way to Jayapura," he stated.
