“To this end, the commission has written to chief of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate, Coms.Gen.Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to notify him about the scheduled questioning session," Komnas HAM chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik said.
"We have sent the letter," he told ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.
The fatal shooting reportedly took place on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road KM 50 on December 7, 2020, and resulted in the death of six FPI members.
In addition to questioning the cops, Komnas HAM investigators would also examine the physical condition of the vehicles that the police officers and six slain guards of FPI leader Habib Rizieq Shihab used on the day of the fatal shooting, he revealed.
He promised to inform local journalists about the scheduled questioning as soon as he receives an official reply from the National Police to the letter.
The Komnas HAM is striving to uncover the truth behind the shooting of six Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members during an encounter with Jakarta police early in the morning on December 7, 2020.
The commission formed a team of investigators to look into the case soon after the Jakarta police chief publicly announced the deaths of the FPI members on December 7, and amid public pleas for a credible and transparent investigation.
The Komnas HAM team has been tasked with determining the facts and gathering accounts pertaining to the incident from the FPI, witnesses, victims' relatives, and community members.
It has already summoned the police hospital’s doctors and collected details on the autopsies of the six slain FPI members.
According to head of the commission's team of investigators, Choirul Anam, the team is seeking additional information on the procedures, processes, and substances pertaining to the autopsy of the bodies of the slain FPI members.
Anam highlighted that the additional explanation regarding the autopsies is of immense significance to the human rights commission in its endeavors to unearth the truth behind the incident.
Last week, the human rights commission had summoned Jakarta Police chief, Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran, and state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga's president director, Subakti Syukur, in connection with the case.
Afterwards, Komnas HAM had voiced its intention to obtain further details surrounding the case.
Komnas HAM chairman Damanik revealed that the human rights commission and the Jakarta police chief have agreed to work on obtaining a detailed account of the fatal shooting.
"We are going to explore more detailed accounts of every aspect, including the substantial evidence. We have agreed on this," Damanik stated.
To this end, the commission's team of investigators has checked and collected more necessary information from PT Jasa Marga.
They have also secured several pieces of evidence pertaining to the condition of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road on the day of the shooting.
PT Jasa Marga had earlier clarified that several CCTV cameras installed on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road reportedly malfunctioned on the day of the shooting due to “technical hurdles”, and not physical damage.
Meanwhile, asserting that the fatal shooting was an extrajudicial killing, FPI secretary general Munarman has urged that an independent fact-finding team involving Komnas HAM be formed to probe the incident.
The Indonesian government, however, has dismissed calls for an independent fact-finding team, Therefore, the case may likely come to Komnas HAM. (INE)
