Gresik, East Java (ANTARA) - Unremitting heavy rains triggered the Kali Lamong River to overflow its bank and cause flooding that swamped hundreds of homes in two sub-districts in Gresik District, East Java Province.

The affected sub-districts were Balongpanggan and Benjeng, Head of the Gresik Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Tarso Sugito stated here on Monday.

In Balongpanggan, seven villages -- Ngampel, Dapet, Sekarputih, Wotansari, Banjaragung, Pucung, and Karangsemanding -- were flooded, submerging 535 houses and roads at a height of up to 90 cm.

In Benjeng, nine villages -- Sedapurklagen, Lundo, Deliksumber, Kedungrukem, Munggugianti, Kalipadang, Bulurejo, Sirnoboyo, and Klampok -- were flooded. At least 345 houses were submerged, with floodwaters reaching heights of between 30 cm and 50 cm.

"We rushed to the flooded locations in coordination with the local authorities and continued to monitor the Lamong River," Tarso notified the press.

Meanwhile, a green alert is in place for Kali Lamongan, while the condition is currently normal for Bengawan Solo and Kali Surabaya River.

"Data collection is still being conducted to determine the residents' material losses, but rice plants for which planting had begun in the paddy fields were damaged," he stated.

Last week, floods had hit several villages in Gresik’s three sub-districts of Balongpanggang, Benjeng, and Cerme and claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl. Related news: Floods swamp five sub-districts in Cirebon, West Java
