Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - Floods caused by unremitting torrential rains over the last 72 hours have displaced 9,988 people in East Aceh District, Aceh Province, according to the local disaster mitigation office (BPBD).

"Owing to heavy rains over the last three days and the overflowing of rivers in the area, water levels at several locations had reached up to 200 centimeters high," Head of BPBD East Aceh Ashadi stated in Idi, Monday.

Payah Laman and Ule Jalan in Banda Alam Sub-district are among the worst affected villages.

"Almost all villages in Banda Alam have been inundated. Moreover, several houses were swept away by flooding. Meanwhile, at other locations, floodwaters reached a height of between 30 and 120 centimeters," Ashadi noted.

The flooding swamped a total of 17,648 homes in 226 villages in East Aceh District.

A total of 18 sub-districts were flooded. The flood-affected sub-districts comprised 25 villages in Julok, 23 villages in Pereulak, 22 villages in Ranto Pereulak, 14 villages in East Peureulak, 13 villages in Sungai Raya, 11 villages in Indra Makmur, seven villages in Peudawa, two villages in Pante Bidari, and one village in Bireum Bayeun.
