The commission's team of investigators have reached the stage for finalizing their report on the outcomes of their probe
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Investigators from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) are finalizing the report on their probe into the fatal shooting of six members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) in December, 2020.

"The commission's team of investigators have reached the stage for finalizing their report on the outcomes of their probe," head of the Komnas HAM's team of investigators, Choirul Anam, said here on Wednesday.

One of the report's sections that needs to be finalized is re-checking and re-examining several videos and screenshots that were obtained from some parties, including interviewed witnesses, he informed.

The commission's investigators are still re-examining more than eight thousand videos and several thousand screenshots related to the incident in several important places, he said.

"We thank all parties who have handed over the substantial data. The Komnas HAM's investigators hope this working stage can be done smoothly so that this fatal shooting case can thoroughly be uncovered," Anam remarked.

Komnas HAM chairman, Ahmad Taufan Damanik, had revealed earlier that he had ascertained the details of the incident after thoroughly checking CCTV cameras installed by state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.

Damanik said he will submit the report of the commission's team of investigators in the first or second week of January, 2021.

Six FPI members involved in securing a motorcade of the group's top leader, Habib Rizieq Shihab, were shot dead early on the morning of December 7, 2020.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police chief, Inspector General Fadil Imran, had announced that on-duty police investigation officers had shot the six guards for attacking them.

The incident took place at 00:30 a.m. local time on Monday, December 7, 2020, on KM 50 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road, Imran informed.

At the time, the officers were probing information on a likely mobilization of masses for which Shihab was to be grilled by the Jakarta Police, he said.

The Jakarta Police had summoned Shihab for allegedly violating COVID-19 health protocols during his daughter's wedding that coincided with the maulid, which marks the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, thereby leading to crowding.

"When officers of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Police followed vehicles suspected of carrying MRS (Muhammad Rizieq Shihab) followers, the officers' vehicle was intercepted and then attacked with firearms and sharp weapons," Imran said.

However, the FPI denied claims that its members had attacked police officers on grounds that they were unarmed.

"FPI members do not have firearms. A shootout is impossible," Munarman, the general secretary of FPI, stated at a press conference.

Asserting that the fatal shooting was an extrajudicial killing, Munarman urged that an independent fact-finding team involving Komnas HAM be formed to uncover the truth behind the incident.

The day Inspector General Fadil Imran announced the deaths of the guards, the Komnas HAM formed a team of investigators to probe the fatal shooting.
