As many as 39 school buildings were severely damaged, while 19 sustained average damage, and 45 others were slightly damaged.Jakarta (ANTARA) - At least 103 school buildings in West Sulawesi have been damaged by the strong earthquakes that jolted the province on January 14 and January 15, 2021, the Ministry of Education and Culture said.
"According to the quick assessment over the quake impact as per January 18, 2021, there were 103 educational units, both under the management of the local government and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, (which were) destructed after the earthquake," Hendarman, spokesperson for the ministry, said in a statement on Tuesday.
"As many as 39 school buildings were severely damaged, while 19 sustained average damage, and 45 others were slightly damaged. We are continuing to coordinate on data collection and conducting the necessary intervention," he added.
The school buildings destroyed in the quakes are scattered across the region, including in the capital Mamuju and Majene, he informed.
The tectonic quakes affected around 1,203 school buildings, 192,027 students, as well as 16,620 teachers and school staff across the province, prompting the ministry to provide evacuee tents and 20 other tents for setting up emergency classrooms, he added.
"Emergency logistics relief, such as instant foods, basic foods, and daily needs for the evacuees, have also been distributed," Hendarman said.
The ministry will also provide psycho-social assistance to the quake-affected, including preparing for emergency school activities, he added. (INE)
