Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rattled West Sulawesi led to the mass displacement of 19,435 people, according to Raditya Jati, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Of the total displaced people, 15,014 are the residents of Mamuju District, while 4,421 people are the residents of Majene District, Jati noted in a press release received here on Monday.

Data from the BNPB's Operations Control Center recorded 25 refugee points in Majene located in Kota Tinggi Village, Lombong, Kayu Angin, Petabean, Deking, Mekata, Kabkir, Lakkading, Lembang Village and Limbua Village.

Meanwhile, in Mamuju, there are five refugee points, notably including in the sub-districts of Mamuju and Simboro.

"The BNPB's Operations Control Center reported that 253 people were seriously injured, comprising 64 people in Majene and 189 people in Mamuju. Meanwhile, 679 people suffered minor injuries," he noted.

The earthquake claimed 81 lives, comprising 11 in Majene and 70 in Mamuju.

A powerful and shallow earthquake hit West Sulawesi on last Friday, which the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) believed was caused by local fault.

The tremor destroyed several buildings, including the governor's office, a military office, and Maleo Hotel.

The earthquake, which also damaged several houses and a public health center, additionally triggered three landslides along the Majene-Mamuju road section and disrupted the transportation of people and goods.
