Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is optimistic of normalcy being restored in face-to-face learning during the second semester of 2021.

"We prioritize teachers (to receive vaccination), so we can resume face-to-face learning early in the first semester," the president remarked after witnessing the administration of COVID-19 vaccine to teachers at the state senior high school building SMA Negeri 70 in South Jakarta on Wednesday.

The president is optimistic that five million teachers throughout Indonesia would have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine by June 2021.

"Hence, when the new academic year begins in July, everything will return to normal," he affirmed.

The president, accompanied by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim, and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, arrived at the school building at 11:10 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

In total, 650 public service officers, comprising teachers, lecturers, and other education workers from across Jakarta, received the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at the school building on Wednesday.

They were divided into three groups. Vaccination of the first group comprising 250 people was held from 8:00 to 10:00 WIB, the second group of 150 people was vaccinated between 10:00 and 12:00 WIB; while inoculation of the third group of 250 people began at 13:00 WIB.

The teachers, lecturers, and education workers will be administered their second shots of the COVID-19 vaccine in 14 days.

The government has targeted to inoculate 181,554,464 people, or 70 percent of Indonesia’s total population, with the objective of creating herd immunity against the coronavirus.

In accordance with the roadmap for COVID-19 vaccination, some 1.46 million healthcare workers at the forefront in the battle against COVID-19 will receive the vaccine shots until April 2021.

In the meantime, the number of senior citizens and public service officers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 is estimated to reach 21.5 million and 16.9 million respectively. Related news: President observes COVID-19 vaccination of teachers in Jakarta
