Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - A fire gutted nine homes in Mutiara village in the westernmost Indonesian province of Aceh early on Tuesday morning and displaced 28 people.

"The residents whose houses were gutted by the fire are taking refuge at their relatives' homes," acting chief of the Aceh Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBA) Ilyas said here on Tuesday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire that broke out around 2.15 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), he informed.

Seven fire trucks were dispatched to put out the blaze.

"Based on the latest information we have received, the fire was extinguished by 5 a.m. WIB," Ilyas said.

According to the BPBA, fires remained the most dominant natural hazard in Aceh in February, 2021. The agency has recorded 37 incidents of forest and land fires since early this year, which have led to Rp14.9 billion in losses.

Fires have also been reported from 29 residential areas during the same period.

"The fire in residential areas burned 37 houses and 11 house-cum-shops or stalls, and compelled 80 people to seek refuge and inflicted an estimated 10 billion in losses,” Ilyas informed.
