Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan highlighted the main problem of the high volume of visitors at Borobudur Temple exerting a huge pressure on its structure.

"Hence, quality tourism will be implemented in Borobudur by preparing the 1979 Master Plan as a reference for the latest Tourism Master Plan," Pandjaitan remarked during his working visit to the super-priority tourism destination of Borobudur on Friday (Mar 13).

Over 3.3 million people had visited Borobudur Temple in 2019, or an equivalent of eight thousand people a day.

On the basis of results of a study by the Borobudur Conservation Center, the peak area of Borobudur Temple is ideally able to accommodate at most 128 visitors per visit each day.

During the visit, the minister was accompanied by Education and Culture Minister Nadiem A. Makarim, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga S. Uno, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo, Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo, Magelang District Head Zaenal Arifin, Public Works and Public Housing Ministry's Director General of Cipta Karya Diana Kusumastuti, and Director General of Highways of the Ministry of PUPR Hedy Rahadian.

Pandjaitan and the entourage reviewed development of the Borobudur Art Village, Kembanglimus Community Center, Palbapang Gate, Pawon Temple Area, Borobudur Temple Concourse, and the authorities' land.

The minister stressed on the need to follow up on the Borobudur-Yogyakarta-Prambanan Integrated Tourism Master Plan to boost the tourism potential of Borobudur and the adjoining areas.

"Based on the earlier coordination meeting, matters that should be followed up include accessibility and connectivity, amenities, attractions, and supporting facilities that can increase the value of tourism in Borobudur," Pandjaitan noted in a written statement here on Saturday.

Infrastructure and facilities required to increase accessibility and boost connectivity comprise roads, transportation access, as well as internet and telecommunications networks.

Homestay and electricity are among the amenities to be prioritized for improving the quality of tourism at Borobudur Temple.

Furthermore, tour packages and cultural attraction events will be improved to attract high-end visitors.
