Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) cautions the community of likely high waves owing to the growth of Tropical Cyclone Odette that originated from the seeds of the 90s cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

Based on monitoring at 7 a.m. local time, the current position of the Tropical Cyclone Odette is at 14 degrees south latitude (LS) and 107 degrees east longitude (BT), or some 780 kilometers in the south-southwest of Cilacap.

"We urge Indonesian people to be aware of the indirect impact of the cyclone. Although its position is quite far, some 780 kilometers, the cyclone can still have an indirect impact on the Indonesian territory, especially the potential for very high waves that can reach a height of 4-6 meters in the waters of the Indian Ocean," Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati stated during a virtual press conference here on Friday.

Karnawati noted that the cyclone caused high waves in the waters of Bengkulu to the west of Lampung and then in the south of Java from West Java to East Java, south of Bali, and south of West Nusa Tenggara.

Potentially very high waves can arise at any time from April 9 to April 11.

"We did not convey it earlier, as the right to announce the origin of the cyclone seed was at the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center in Perth. We just received the information," she stated.

The BMKG also urged the public to be aware of other indirect impacts of Tropical Cyclone Odette, such as moderate to heavy rainfall that can be accompanied by strong winds and lightning, especially in the next 24 hours, starting at noon or late afternoon.

Areas estimated to be affected comprise Lampung, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara.

"Within 24 hours from now, people in these provinces are asked to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning that can trigger landslides or flash floods, in addition to the potential for very high waves of four to six meters in the waters," Karnawati remarked.
