We have to produce smart digital specialists and reliable technologists that can compete and develop smart digital-preneurs to create jobs at home.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) believes national development planning should encourage the creation of technologists to compete amid swift developments in science and technology.

"We have to produce smart digital specialists and reliable technologists that can compete and develop smart digital-preneurs to create jobs at home," Jokowi remarked at the State Palace here on Tuesday.

Widodo made the statement at the opening of the national meeting on development planning 2021.

"We have to derive maximum benefits from technological developments. Amid rapid developments in technology, and with 5G digital connectivity, we have to be careful. We should not only become smart digital users," he noted.

Jokowi pointed out that almost all companies are now technology-based to boost their added value.

"In the financial sector, for instance, several fintech firms can operate efficiently. The financial industry has shifted to rely on technology and innovation," he stated.

The head of state also called on development planners to take anticipatory measures for the development of technology in healthcare.

"Health tech has growth rapidly. Not only in distance medical consultation but also the use of artificial intelligence for diagnosis, medical treatment, precision medicine, and distance surgery. It can be done from everywhere," he explained.

In the education sector, the COVID-19 pandemic has expedited the application of education technology.

"Distance learning has become a necessity. Online education service has grown fast, and learning materials can be accessed from any sources," the president stated.

Through the application of technology, Jokowi believes teachers and schools can play their role as facilitators for freedom of learning for students.

The meeting’s attendees comprised Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, National Development Planning Minister/National Development Planning Agency Head Suharso Monoarfa, Home Minister Tito Karnavian, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and regional leaders.
