Jakarta (ANTARA) - An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit Tahuna in Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi Province on early Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake which broke out at 2:46 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) was located 236 kilometers southwest of Tahuna at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency said on its official website www.bmkg.go.id, gempa.

No early tsunami warning was issued, However, the BMKG called on the local residents to stay alert for aftershocks.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 is considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage on land.
