Semarang, C Java (ANTARA) - The Central Java provincial government has prepared the college of economics (STIE) at Bank Jateng in Semarang city to become a quarantine site, as several districts struggle to reduce growing COVID-19 infection rates.

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo visited the college building on Tuesday to ensure that all facilities have been prepared to receive residents seeking medical care.

Pranowo said the STIE Bank Jateng might have been used earlier by local residents with mild COVID-19 symptoms or asymptomatic carriers who should be isolated and quarantined.

Additionally, significant hikes in COVID-19 cases has begun affecting bed occupancy rates at several hospitals in the province, he noted, while urging all district and city administrations to work together to treat the growing number of COVID-19 cases.

Over the past few days, several district areas in Central Java have been facing significant increases in new COVID-19 cases.

The provincial government has even classified Kudus, Jepara, Pati, Demak, Grobogan, Sragen, Brebes and Tegal Districts as "red zones" due to their high infection risks.

In helping address a major increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Kudus, for instance, the district has received assistance from 96 medical workers from other areas in Central Java.

The medical workers included five lung specialists, five internists, 38 general practitioners and 48 nurses, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said earlier.

In the wake of the growing number of coronavirus cases in Kudus, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo spoke of the importance of stepping up testing, tracing and treatment.

In a recent press statement, Prabowo emphasized that along with bolstering testing, tracing, and treatment, local residents should also continue to diligently follow the 5M health protocols.

The 5M health protocols include wearing face masks, washing hands, maintaining physical distancing measures, avoiding crowds, and reducing mobility.

In the company of Indonesian Military Commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Ganip Warsito, Prabowo paid a visit to Kudus over the weekend, as the district recorded a major spike in new COVID-19 cases.

The local residents who have been traced need to remain homebound and self-isolate until their swab test results are reported, Prabowo emphasized.

Those required to self-isolate will be monitored by military and police officers, tasked with ensuring optimal enforcement of micro-scale public activity restrictions (PPKM-Mikro) to stem COVID-19 transmissions, he said.

If residents' swab test results confirmed that they suffer from COVID-19 symptoms, residents would be moved from their homes to the Donoyudan Boyolali Haj Dormitory.

Equipped with 800 beds and a a staff of doctors and health workers, the haj dormitory is safeguarded by military and police officers, he added.
